Increased grants and better reporting
In Disability Services we started to have difficulties providing senior management with the statistics and reports they needed. In the beginning it was just a matter of getting the HESA return done and correct, but gradually the reporting workload started to increase. It got to the point where we felt that the service was suffering because of the reporting demands of people external to Student Services. The real pain was that we also realized our grant returns were not correct and we were missing out on funding that was desperately needed.
We implemented a database system called Maximizer from the StudentRelate people and this allowed us to see the full scale of the problem. By relying on paper systems we had been missing out on a significant amount of government funding. With the student disability database system we increased our funding by 10's of thousands of pounds. We were also able to give management better statistics and a better breakdown of student numbers and disability types in each part of the university. We were amazed that it was possible to implement in less than 2 months. People said they had never seen an IT system become operational so quickly.
